The highest-percent DNA-verified polled bulls of the breed
Die Hard, Bruce Willis and their flushmate sister G.I. Jane are the only 99%+ PB polled bulls of the breed with 15 out of 16 legs in the 4-generation pedigree DNA-verified all the way back unbroken to original import animals (as of 2018). Every sire in their 3-generation pedigree is a DNA-verified full-blood, and every sire in their 4-generation pedigree is DNA-verified unbroken to original imports — making them 15/16ths (93.75%) DNA-verified polled animals.
The only animal in their entire 4-generation pedigree without an unbroken DNA-verification chain to original imports is the very bottom maternal grand dam, "Granny Girl" — the great Snake River Farms donor cow with 41 registered progeny. Most other polled lines hit non-DNA-verified animals in the 2nd or 3rd generation, in several legs at once. The polled gene itself entered through "AB Kushimoto," the Agribeef/Snake River Farms donor — the only animal in the 3-generation pedigree besides the dam that is not a full-blood.
Three calves, three stories
"Die Hard" (E148D) is a miracle baby. Four TransOva Angus receipt cows were picked up less than a week before calving and packed into the rear 8-ft section of a gooseneck for a 24-hour, 1,400-mile haul from Iowa to New York. When the gate opened, a half-trampled Wagyu calf with swollen legs and a crushed tail rolled out. He wouldn't nurse; the vet doctored him and the mother was run into the chute to hand-milk colostrum. Bald as could be — no horn buds — so we knew he was polled. Within minutes he stood and walked (more like limped); within a week or two the crushed tail fell off, the swelling went down, and Die Hard was running the pasture like any spring calf.
"Bruce Willis" (E148B) had it easier — born on a beautiful spring day in a green pasture a week or so after the Iowa trip. We felt his head, knew he was polled, and since we already had a "Die Hard," his bald brother became "Bruce Willis."
"G.I. Jane" (E148G) was a fighter from the start. A flushmate to the other two, her receipt mama took off on her; she was lost in a swampy area for a couple days and found weak, skinny and dehydrated. Once we knew she was polled we caught the wild receipt mama, hand-milked colostrum, and tube-fed her a couple days until she recovered 100%. What better name to go with Die Hard and Bruce Willis than G.I. Jane.
